Throughout my site and in my pricing guide (if you're interested in seeing it, shoot me an email/head on over to my contact page) I talk a lot about how I think it is super important to jive well with your wedding photographer and why I, as one of them, think it is insanely helpful to have an in-person consultation when you're searching for your photographer. Why is this something I stress so much? You're going to be spending A LOT of time with your wedding photographer! A good photographer will meet with you prior to your wedding (I like to meet twice or more if needed) in order to get to know you and your other half, what you're looking for in terms of envisioning your wedding day and the photos you receive after, and how that photographer fits into that vision.
The first time I meet with clients we are both trying to decide if I'm a good fit for them. I want them to be comfortable not only with my portfolio but also with who I am as a person. I'll be spending the majority of a very important day with you and the last thing you want is for your photographer to annoy the heck out of you or not be on the same wavelength as you. My style is very candid and relaxed so that my clients are also relaxed and enjoying themselves. I'm all about zero stress for my clients.
The second time I meet with clients is typically for their engagement photos if they choose to include that in their package. An engagement shoot is wonderful for many reasons. Obviously, the photos you get are the best part, but it also gives me the chance to see how you react with a camera pointed at you and it lets you see how I work behind the camera. This makes it so much easier come your wedding day when you already know my style and I know if I should be cracking jokes to get you to loosen up or if you're a blinker or not.
The third time I meet with my clients is two weeks prior to their wedding. Two weeks because everything is typically set in stone by then and you're not yet going crazy with getting the last minute details in order. This is the time where I sit down with you and go through the timeline of your wedding day, sometimes in 15 minute increments in order to be super detailed, so that both you and I know exactly what's going on and when. This is super important to me because I don't want to interrupt your day to ask you questions about what's going to happen next or what the name of your officiant is... I just want you to live in the moment and be present in what is going on around you!
My main goal as your wedding photographer is for you to enjoy your day. I do realize that your time is important and scheduling a one-on-one consult may not be at the top of the list of things you want to spend your time on, however, it is usually a very enlightening meeting for my clients. Many who have met with me are often floored at all of the things they didn't think of that I've educated them about in terms of their wedding planning. I'm all about making my clients' wedding planning as easy as possible since after spending so much time with them we typically end up as friends in the end! The moral of this story is quite clear: schedule a consult with your potential wedding photographer and make sure they're putting your wants and needs first. As far as I'm concerned, that's how it should be!
